Guest Post by Captain Jay O’Brien
Captain Jay O’Brien of Irish Wake Fishing here. The fishing in and around Mobile Bay is a highly underrated fishery. We are currently experiencing an epic spring bite right now. 30 to 50 or more fish days are not uncommon right now with some good quality Speckled Trout mixed in with school trout.
Speckled Trout are being caught on the shallow flats of Mobile Bay and the Mississippi Sound in great numbers using live shrimp or shrimp imitations like the Egret Vudu under popping corks. Mullet and bait fish imitations like The Slick Lure, Bomber Mullet, and Mirrolure Mirrodines are also producing high quality trout on the flats.
Deeper water structures are also starting to produce high quality specks in the 2lb – 7lb range using live bait under slip cork rigs. We practice catch and release on my boat for trout over 23″ to help ensure the health of the fishery.
The Tripletail fishing has also been incredible this spring! From what I can see, the early arrival may lead to record numbers of Tripletail this season.
