Heroes On the Water – ProStaff Update (by Jason Paul)

heading out

On August 4th the Yak Shack in Portland, Texas hosted a kayak fishing tournament to benefit the Heroes on the Water (HOW) San Antonio, Texas Chapter. As a member of the pro staff for the Yak Shack, I took it upon myself to help out with the HOW members fishing and volunteered to take one of our Heroes out on the water with me. If you are not familiar with this organization, Heroes on the Water’s mission is to help wounded warriors relax, rehabilitate and reintegrate into society through kayak fishing and the outdoors. I began the morning worried about fishing, but soon learned that catching a fish is not as important in the grand scheme of things. Everyone has the good days and less…

CCR® Pro Staff Fishing Report – Bill Bostic, 17 June 2012

June 16 tournament 2012 005

“Every once in a while, when on the water, you catch a surprise fish.” The Flathead Catfish bit a 10″ worm while fishing with my CCR® 7′-6″ flipping stick. It took about 5 minutes to wear it down enough to slide it into the landing net. Estimated to be in the 30-40 pound range, this “cat” gave a up a good fight! Also, the other photo is a bass, post-spawn that easily would have landed somewhere in the 6 lb range. Both were released! – Bill Bostic Cajun Custom Rods® ProStaff 16 June 2012 (Mark Twain Lake) / Tournament Update   CCR® additional notes: Bill’s 7’6″ flipping stick mentioned in the above fishing report incorporates the following fishing rod components and custom rod design that he…

Cajun Custom Rods® Bass Tournament Update – Bill Bostic

ADB Tourney - LOZ 4-28-2012 (2)

Last weekend (28 April 2012) Cajun Custom Rods® Pro Staff Angler, Mr. Bill Bostic, fished to a 3rd-place finish in a Lake Of The Ozarks (LOZ) bass fishing tournament … swinging “Big Bass” for the tourney. “nice work Bill and congrats on not only fishing well, but landing the big bass!” The picture below shows the big bass and another 5 pound plus largemouth bass, anchoring Bill’s 19.86 pound tournament weight. Most of the fish, including the big girl (5.78lbs) were taken on a 1/2 ounce jig, PB&J, with a watermelon trailer in 10′ – 20′ of water. Pro Staff Fishing Report: Mark Twain Lake, MO

Bill-Bass1

This report just received from Mr. Bill Bostic, one of Cajun Custom Rod®’s Pro Staff Team members – “Thanks for the update Bill – awesome catch and those bass look healthy!”: Saturday, 4/7/12, fishing on Mark Twain Lake in NE Missouri. Lake conditions – advanced for early April, 58 – 60 degrees surface temps, water clear to slightly stained, bass in pre-spawn mode with early signs of spawning activity. Lure of choice, spinner baits and soft plastic drop baits, Texas rigged. Crankbaits would have been on the lure list, however with the lake recently rising, the flooded grass (mostly the dead variety) crankbaits were too cumbersome to fish effectively. Side note – with the enormous amount of spinnerbait fishing, it had me designing my next…

What is the Alabama Rig? How is It Used? What Fishing Rod Should I Choose?

Alabama Rig

When times are tough, folks in the United States don’t just sit back and rest on their laurels … they go fishing.  When fishing is slow, those same Americans allow natural innovation and ingenuity to take hold of their thoughts and that’s when those world-class ideas hit you “like a ton of bricks.”  Whether that angler’s thoughts have wandered to “the next best boat cup holder,” “a lure adjustment to get to the right depth or have the right wiggle, bobble, splash or other subdued action,” or “just another technical approach on how that angler is going to fill the live well with their targeted game-fish” … it just happens.  That same angler comes up with a new idea, approach, or technique that not only…

CCR® Goes “Through the Ice!”

Rainbow-Trout

New Mexico fishing has proved to be very different than the bass fishing of the midwest and the north woods fishing of Canada. Upon arrival to Raton, New Mexico I was eager to get my rods out and sample the trout fishing that I had read so much about. Within days of arrival I had gathered enough local intelligence that I felt I was prepared enough to try my hand at the local fisheries. The nearest body of water was Lake Maloya, about fifteen minutes north of the town and about a thousand feet higher in elevation putting it at around 7,000 feet above sea level. As I neared the lake my anticipation turned into grief. I rounded the final bend and crested the road…

ATC Bushido Logo

At Cajun Custom Rods®, we’re always on the lookout for “cutting edge” and “performance-enhancing” rod components.  So, when we learned of a new line of “super secret rod blanks” that American Tackle has been developing … well, needless to say, we’ve been watching closely and have been trying to get additional information.  Today, American Tackle has released some fantastic updates via their newsletter that we’d like to share: The process of developing Bushido blanks continues. It was a collaboration of fishermen, rod builders and blank engineers beginning the quest for the Bushido freshwater and inshore blanks. Combining the desired specifications to new materials and practical manufacturing takes time to perfect. Each round of samples produced must graduate an exacting series of evaluations. Their weights, tip/butt target…

At Cajun Custom Rods®, not only do we build the best performance and custom fishing rods in the world, but we always go the extra mile when it comes to our customers and their satisfaction.  This time, we’d like to show you a few reasons of just how we do this … from every meticulous step we take in building your custom fishing rod design to how we ship your rod.  Recently, we coordinated with one of our Pro Staff Team to get a rod in that needed some TLC before the “heat” of the spring thaw, spawn, and tournament season kicks off.  We had our Pro Staffer ship the rod back to us and here’s what arrived (see for yourself the damage):  …

Late Summer Fishing Report – 2011

Jon's Monster Pike

There’s nothing like the late summer/early fall bite, especially when your out on the water with family or friends. This quick Cajun Custom Rods® fishing report is no exception with catches from as far north as Lake Of The Woods, Canada and just a bit south to lake Okoboji, Iowa. We’ll start off with a “monster” of an update from Jon Vroom and his family for their summer outing at lake Of The Woods, Canada. Jon worked on several custom fishing rods for his brothers and his dad for the trip and from the pics below, you’ll soon agree that the Vroom family certainly put those rods through their paces. Wow! Check out the size of those Northern Pickerel (aka Pike)! Jon’s two biggest each…

A Few Thoughts On “New Technology”

CCR-IFP-Matrix-Custom

I am familiar with many manufacturer’s fishing rods and do not necessarily agree with their philosophy regarding “new technology” … that’s why we test new products (rod components) that manufacturers claim as “new technology” extensively here at Cajun Custom Rods®. For instance, their are multiple manufacturers that claimed the micro guide was the “next best thing” when it came to enhancing performance rods … but I had no knowledge or experience with such guides (save single foot fly guides). So, in good Cajun Custom Rods® fashion, we purchased several varieties of micro guides from different manufacturers to see for ourselves. Initially we duplicated a few rods to meet current manufacturer/industry specifications of micro guide rods (i.e., the rods they were mass producing for retail sales)…

Three Mile Lake, Iowa (July 3, 2011)

Cajun Custom Rods Bass

A few of us from Cajun Custom Rods® headed down the road, east this time to Three Mile Lake in Iowa … just east of the city of Creston.  We’ve not fished too many of the reservoirs or lakes in Iowa, so with the day off and decent weather predicted, decided to load the boat and give it a try.  It takes about 2.5 hours to drive with the boat from Omaha to Three Mile Lake and we arrived about noon at the ramp.  After rigging out our custom fishing rods, we dropped in and headed toward the dam – expecting the water to be a little cooler and deeper … draw the fish up with some crankbait action.  When we got to the dam,…

Elwood Reservoir Fishing Report #2, Nebraska (July 2, 2011)

Elwood Reservoir Crappie

On our second day of the Cajun Custom Rods® fishing road trip in Western Nebraska, we had planned to begin heading back towards Omaha, Nebraska.  We slept in (because we had fished until late the previous night) and over breakfast, discussed what where we’d like to fish for the day.  Conditions were vastly different as compared to the previous day on Elwood Reservoir with winds 5-20 knots (varied for certain), overcast and cooler with air temps around 65 degrees.  We decided to head back to Elwood and see how the bite was for the lake … and if not as good, head on east down I-80 and try a few of the lakes we investigated the day prior (War Axe, Union Pacific, Blue Hole, Sandy…

Elwood Reservoir Fishing Report, Nebraska (July 1, 2011)

Jack bass Elwood

We headed out for a few days out in West Nebraska to do some fishing and spend some time together (and to try out a few new Cajun Custom Rod® prototypes we’ve been working) … nothing like a good road trip coupled with the adventures of fishing new lakes and the excitement that goes with the two!  We headed down I-80 West on the morning of 2 July and didn’t stop until Lexington, Nebraska.  Along the way we checked out a few of the Nebraska I-80 Lakes for reference .  We wanted to fish them as we worked our way back east on I-80 on the 3rd and were in no hurry, so we drove in and checked out the following lakes along the I-80…

Cajun Custom Rod® versus St. Croix® Legend Extreme

ALL BLANKS 4

We often field questions to compare a Cajun Custom Rod® to “off-the-shelf” fishing rods … so we thought it about time to give you the “no holds barred” truth of the matter. With this stated, we’ve gone into the CCR® Build-Your-Rod pallette and have designed as close to an exact replica of a rod series that is current and available on the market today in many retail stores. So without further adue, here’s the line up: St. Croix® Legend Xtreme versus Cajun Custom Rods®. ***Legend: Red denotes an inferior difference and Green denotes a superior difference throughout the comparison. Skylar Hamilton “Represents” – Bass Pro Shops Southern Open #3

Cajun Custom Rods® very own, Skylar Hamilton of Big Stone Gap, Virginia fished in a field of 160 Pro-Bass Anglers and finished in 23rd place overall! At the “ripe old age” of 16, Skylar put the “youth” on many-a-seasoned veterans of the Bassmaster open circuit. After fishing the first day, his fish weights launched him to 36th place in the tournament hosted on Douglas Lake in Jefferson County, Tennessee.  “Way to go Skylar!” We recently spoke with Skylar and here’s what our Cajun Custom Rods® Pro Angler had to say: “The field was full of Pro and Amateur Bass Anglers as I looked around at the other boats on day one … many of them are anglers that I grew up with … in admiration…

Lawrence Youngman Lake Fishing Report – 28 May 2011

With only a few hours to fish on Saturday evening, 28 May 2011 … Tristan and I each grabbed a custom rod and headed out to try a new local lake in Omaha, Nebraska that recently opened this spring. The lake is located on 192nd and West Dodge and is named “Lawrence Youngman Lake.” We only fished for about an hour and from the shore, but managed three bass – all about 1 pound. As this lake was just opened to the public, we were pretty certain the bass would be smaller, but probably hungry … and definitely worth a scouting trip to see how things looked … and fished. Air temperature was approximately 55 degrees with 5-10 knot winds out of the northwest, there…

Fremont, Nebraska Fishing Report (Lake #20, 21 May 2011)

Wow! Talk about putting the custom fishing rods through the ringer … try on 50+ bass and a muskie in an afternoon of fishing! On Saturday, 21 May 2011, my son and I headed out for Fremont Lakes, Nebraska for an afternoon/evening fishing trip. We arrived at Fremont Lake #20 around 1:00 PM and launched the boat … and headed for the far eastern end of the lake. Tristan loaded up his custom rod with a 3/8 ounce white spinnerbait (KVD double willow-leaf with the red stripe in the skirt) and I threw on a Terminator white and chartreuse 3/9 ounce (modified with a single brass thumper) spinner bait. Before too long, we were into the bass and into them thick. We placed the boat…

Cajun Custom Rods® – Lake Mozingo, MO Fishing Report

Cajun Custom Rods® took a break last Saturday, 14 May 2011 and drove south to try out some new rod designs as well as catch a few pre-spawn and spawn largemouth bass on Lake Mozingo, Missouri.  By the way, full moon was Sunday night, 15 May 2011 … so we figured our odds for the road trip were pretty good to hook up with a few lunkers.  We left from Omaha,Nebraska Saturday morning around 8:00 AM and arrived at the lake approximately 2 hours later, ready to drop the boat in and fish. The air temperature was a balmy 48-52 degrees throughout the day, cooling off into the evening.  Late morning and early afternoon provided broken to mostly cloudy skies with winds out of the…
